This fascinating device from France was used approximately 120 years ago as a way to clean the inside of wine bottles. The metal wires are inserted into the bottle and are rotated by the wooden handle that operates the bevel gears. Cleaning the bottles allowed vineyards and taverns to reuse the receptacles. A visible production mark indicates that this particular cleaner was from the French mail order company, “Manufrance”, which first opened in 1888 in St. Etienne. The iron cogs have been cleaned, allowing the cleaner to function properly, although most collectors will choose to display the wine bottle cleaner as an interesting decorative object in a wine room, kitchen or bar area.
